This makes it a lot easier to work on a huge amount of terrain because modders do not need to raise land themselves in the Construction Set, just having to edit the existing terrain generated before.
Plus, with this heightmap generator you can make the landmass use exactly the shape it's supposed to have. I do not know about the entire process and how to make heightmaps, but I know that a well-made heightmap is extremely valuable for a province mod like Skyrim - Home of the Nords.

But how do you know how high or low the ground is supposed to be in any and every exterior cell? How do you know where there is a valley or a lake or a small hill or ravine or cliff?

That didn't answer my question though. How do you know how high it is supposed to be? The answer you gave me is for if I would have asked, "How do you make a height map?". See the difference?

Well it's not tough to figure out how you make a digital height map.

It's the same method used for anything, normal maps (split into RGB), bump maps etc.
Black and white image. Black for low and white for high.

Hm, guess I'd have to actually do it to fully understand what is being done. Wikipedia just confuses me more on the subject since I'm unfamiliar with the process.
